Zakah on Crops Math Problems

assalamu alaykum wa rahmatUllah

This was our second club day this month and we planned an all day game day - with games related atleast somewhat to this month's theme: "Harvesting."

One game was questions related to the Story of Yusuf (as). The kids, who were asked to study the story at home, were divided into teams and competed against each other to answers questions about the story correctly. Hopefully the sister who prepared this game will be able to post those questions to the blog soon insha'Allah.

The second game was Arabic Fruits and Veggies Bingo. The kids really had fun with this one!

The third game that was planned (but we actually decided to save it until next time because the kids were a little too tired to focus...) was a problem solving game. Details will be posted in the following blog insha'Allah.

The fourth game, which is posted here, was a number of math problems related to zakah on crops. Zakah on crops is due at the time of harvest. To solve the problems, the children needed to learn some of the basic rulings of paying zakah on crops. They also needed to:
- learn about the concept of percentages and how to calculate percentages
- use skip counting by tens and fives
- demonstrate knowledge about "greater than" and "less than" to determine whether a farmer owes zakah
- use addition to determine the total weight of each farmer's harvest.

There are two different sets of problems for children at different levels.

I still have a problem cutting and pasting into the blog, so the actual document is pasted below in the first comment. Hope that many of us can benefit insha'Allah

  1. Zakat on Crops Math Game

    Intro to game:

    Qur’an verse:
"It is He who has created all kind of plants; trellised and untrellised, the palm trees, the field crops with produce of different kinds, the olive and pomegranates similar in kind yet different in taste. Eat of their fruit in their season and give away their Zakah on the harvest day. Do not be spendthrift; surely He does not love the spendthrifts”.[6:141]

Farmer pays zakah on their crops at the time of harvesting.

The minimum amount of crops that one must have harvested to owe zakat is 609 kilograms (After it is dried and the husks, etc. have been removed). If you have this amount of crops, you pay zakah on the entire amount that you have harvested. If you don’t have this amount, you don’t pay any zakah.

The percentage of zakah that you pay depends on whether you watered it through your own effort or not.

Zakah for crops that have not been watered with effort is 10 percent
Zakah for crops that were watered with effort is 5 percent

    YOUNGER KIDS
    1) If a farmer has 700 kg of dates, does he pay zakah?
    2) If a farmer has 378 kg of dates, does he pay zakah?
    3) If a farmer has 500 kg of dates and 300 kg of grapes, does he pay zakah?

    4) There is a farmer with 800 kg of wheat. He DID NOT water his fields with his own effort. Does he owe zakah? If yes, how much does he pay?

    5) The neighboring farmer also has 800 kg of wheat, but he DID water his fields with effort. Does he owe zakah? How much does he pay?

    B) There is a farmer who has harvested:
    100 kg grapes
    300 kg of dates
    100 kg of barley

How many kg is his total harvest?
    Does he pay zakah?

The next year, that farmer harvests the same amount of grapes, dates and barley, but he also grows wheat.
    So in total, he harvests

    100 kg grapes
    300 kg dates
    100 kg barley
    200 kg wheat

How much is his total harvest?
Does he pay zakah this year?

How much does he pay if he watered the field with his own effort?

How much does he pay if he watered the field without effort?

    OLDER KIDS
A farmer pays zakah on all his crops IF he has harvested more than 609 kg.
Which farmers below must pay zakat?
    1) Farmer A who harvested:
80 kg of dates, 500 kg of grapes, 30 kg of barley

    Farmer B who harvested
250 kg grapes, 320 kg of dates, 225 kg of barley

    Farmer C who harvested
35 kg of grapes, 245 kg of dates, 155 kg of barley and 95 kg of wheat

    Farmer D
700 kg of dates and 50 kg of barley

When a farmer waters with his own effort, he must pay 5 percent of the harvest as zakah (if he has more than 609kg of total harvest). If he does not water his field with his own effort, he must pay 10 percent.
For each farmer listed below, calculate how much zakah he owes if he watered his own field and how much he owes if he didn’t
    1) Farmer E harvested
95 kg grapes, 465 kg dates, 295 kg barley

If he watered: If he didn’t:

    2) Farmer F harvested
285 kg grapes, 175 kg dates, 105 kg barley

If he watered: if he didn’t:

    3) CHALLENGE PROBLEM

How many kilograms did a farmer harvest if he had to pay 30 kg of zakah?
